Crescent Shield Vocalist Michael Grant Has Passed Away

by Dan on May.31, 2012, under News

Today I have lost a dear and close friend, a band mate, and a heavy metal brother.  Michael Grant passed away on May 31, 2012 at Glendale Memorial Hospital in Glendale, CA after a relatively brief but serious illness.  He was 39 years old.  He was peaceful and surrounded by family at the time of his passing.  Michael recorded and toured with several bands throughout his career most notably Onward on Century Media Records and more recently Crescent Shield on Cruz del Sur Music.

Michael’s rich and powerful baritone and clean melodic vocal style made him a distinct voice in heavy metal.  He was known for crafting memorable vocal hooks and layered harmonies.  He often weaved multiple vocal phrases together creating a complex and striking tapestry of vocal melodies.   Perhaps most notable however was the passion Mike sang with.   He could evoke the strength and grandiloquence of the mightiest metal warrior or the mournful atmosphere of a passing life.

Mike was more than just a singer though.  He was a greatly talented songwriter and lyricist.  Although he didn’t play an instrument, he would often write complete songs by humming guitar lines and vocalizing drum beats.  His lyrics were profound, evocative and often personal.  He was a true lover of heavy metal and would sing its praises with a sense of poetry and grandeur.  No matter the topic: journeys into the unknown, the choices we make in life, religious dogma, or a crimson moonrise, Mike always delivered a moving message with unique elegance.

Writing, recording, and performing music with Mike in Crescent Shield was a joy.  We were in synch creatively and complimented each other’s abilities very well.   We produced music for the love of it.  We performed for the love of it.  Crescent Shield’s pinnacle performance at Keep It True 08 in Germany was a dream come true for both of us.

Working with Mike was the most creatively rewarding experience of my life.  Although the band has been on hiatus for a while, Mike and I still were writing new material and his voice and creative energies were still in top form.   Losing him at such a young age is both shocking and tragic.  I will miss my musical companion, my metal brother, and my friend.

Memorial plans and gift/donation designations have not yet been arranged. Please check back soon for more information.

Very sad to hear of Michaels passing. I will always hold fond memories of Michael. As Onwards manager during the Century Media years, I had the opportunity to spend alot of time with Mike. He would catch flights to Las Vegas frequently and we always welcomed Mike with a huge party and a cold Guinness which I’m sure he loved. RIP Bud!

I am very sorry for your loss Dan. I’m a long-time follower of Grant’s work ever since the first Onward album, and discovered CS as a result of that following. This is most unexpected news, I never met Mike but I feel a great sense of loss, and wish that I would have had the chance to see him perform and meet him in person. R.I.P. Michael. :(

“Let’s keep the Metal going, let’s keep it happy”
I remember these words Mike said at Keep-It-True Ferstival/Germany in 2008 and still cannot belive that he’s gone. I met Mike in person that day at KIT, we had some nice conversations and stayed in contact ever since. Hearing about his death was simply a shock! He had a lot of fans/Friends here in Germany and simply everybody mourns his loss!
Wherever you are Mike, keep the Metal going!
The Metal community has lost one of it’s greatest talents and best guys!

I had the pleasure of knowing Michael for a while, and seeing both Onward & Crescent Shield live, but had been out of touch lately. This is a huge shock, and my sympathies are with Michael’s family & friends.

I’ve been a fan of Michael Grant since the Onward days. I was blown away by his amazing voice the first time I listened to Evermoving. I was more than thrilled when I found out about him participating in Crescent Shield, and rightfully so. The Stars of Never Seen is still one of my very favorite US power metal albums and I was really hoping for more of that great stuff in the future. Unfortunately that’s not going to happen. My condolences to his friends and family, and the best of luck to the band’s future projects. RIP Michael… Thanos - Greece.

Very sad news. Condolences to his family, the band, his friends. I didn’t know that i was ill.
It was so great to hear him and crescent shield at the keep it true X. I had the opportunity to talk to Michael after the show. We had a short but nice conversation.
I just hoped to see Crescent shield another time on stage since this festival.
One of my friend told me that he sang also with legend Maker on “the path of glory” album. I will have to discover this album now, to keep his memory alive!

    Just found out…this is crushing

Mike’s performances are sublime, and his lyrics for crescent shield have helped me get through some really tough anxieties these past few years, i think “Lifespan” has taken on some very real meaning for CS fans

I hope that the memories of making all that fantastic music will help everyone involved with CS get through this hard time, and his family and friends will remember him for his wisdom and appreciation of life
